How do you make a simple outfit look GOOD?

It seems like everyone on Instagram has an infinite amount of clothes and unique pieces in their wardrobe, which makes all their outfits look so different. But I’m going to let you in on a secret… the reality is, they just make very subtle but effective tweaks, which make really simple outfits look super chic! There are serveal ways to spice up your outfit by playing around with the pieces already sitting in your wardrobe.

The video above is a link to my YouTube video, where I break down my favourite ways to elevate a basic outfit and make it look more expensive and classy. For a written summary of my fashion hacks, continue reading!

Hack 1

Designer Belts

Okay, now just hear me out first. I know this first hack probably isn’t what you had in mind, and if you don’t already own a designer belt it might be quite hard to implement. BUT, if you’re looking for a serious way to make your basic outfit look expensive then investing in a good belt will work wonders. The reason I think this is a good hack is because generally people start splurging on designer bags and shoes when they want to glamourise their wardrobe.

Designer handbags and even shoes can be extremely pricey, and can set you backs thousands of pounds. Belts on the other hand, will set you back a fraction of the cost (most are in the hundreds of pounds) and if you’re able to get your hands on a second-hand/vintage piece then even better!

Despite the smaller price tag, belts are a really subtle but impactful way to bring a simple look together and make it instantly look more chic. With that being said, if you’re someone particularly thinking of investing into some designer pieces to elevate your wardrobe, start with belts!

Hack 2

Jewellery

I’m a huge fan of gold hardware jewellery items. That’s just my personal preference, but I think it’s totally up to the individual to decide which jewellery pieces and tones work best for them.

When it comes to necklaces, I like sticking to very minimalistic and dainty pieces. I also LOVE personalised jewellery. I think it’s a really nice way to make an outfit unique and put your stamp on it, if you’re wearing a piece of jewellery that has a personal message to you in some way. Layering necklaces is also a great way to make a simple outfit look extra chic. I would only really jewellery if the base of my outfit was really plain and nondescript, so that the jewellery could bring the look to life.

When it comes to earrings, I have the opposite attitude compared to necklaces – i.e. I love myself a big hooped earring/door knocker style/anything that’s big, bold and beautiful. That being said, I don’t think I would combine both necklaces and earrings so that I could keep my look balanced and not too overbearing.

Hack 3

Hairstyles

I think this next hack is extremely underrated and overlooked by so many! Switching up you hairstyle is probably the most effortless way to making a simple outfit look good. If you usually wear your hair straight, curl it, tie it in a bun or a braid. There’s so many ways to alter your hairstyle and by doing so, you’re adding more dimension to your overall look.

One of my go-to hairstyles is a messy bun. I think this works really well when combined with a chunky earring and just these two changes alone can completely transform a simple outfit.

Hack 4

Jackets

Experimenting with outer-wear is also a great way to enhance a simple outfit. By adding layers, you’re again creating more dimension and different jackets can definitely change the tone of your whole look.

My 2 favourites are either a black leather jacket or a blue fur coat.

I love wearing my leather jacket if I’m wanting to create a more edgy look but keep it looking quite casual at the same time.

Alternatively, my fur jacket adds a chic and more girly element to the simple outfit, which is a completely different vibe.

Hack 5

Shoes

Similar to jackets, I think changing up your footwear is a great way to take your simple outfit to the next level. The easiest way to do this is to wear heels or heeled boots. You can definitely opt for trainers if you prefer but I think if you’re wanting a chic and more expensive-looking outfit then wearing some sort of heel is a great way to achieve this.

I have 2 favourite kinds of heels: one being a heeled black boot and the other being a perspex clear heel.

Both options are great for a variety of occasions and it doesn’t really matter where you’re going, I’m pretty sure either one would work.
